After Transe (2013) and Näss (2018), Fouad Boussouf’s Oüm closes his triptych on the Arab world and celebrates an imaginary encounter between XX-century Egyptian diva Oum Kalthoum and XI-century Persian poet Omar Khayyam.

An inseparable part of his childhood soundscape, Oum Kalthoum’s songs accompanied Boussouf everywhere. Her voice, feelings and lyrics – from the most personal to the most violent – were something he felt, and still feels, deeply connected to.

Later in life, Boussouf discovered the Rubaiyat – the quatrain poem of Persian poet Omar Khayyam. An inspiring ode to living in the present moment, the text draws its force from evoking pleasure, delight, elation and trance.

The feelings, mind and soul states behind these texts are the foundation of Boussouf’s new production. On stage, accompanied by live music and through their movement, the performers give life to an eternal trance where song, poetry, dance and music unite to celebrate the present moment.
